Performing Localization Testing


When an application is customized for a domestic market, it is said to be localized. Testing a localized product to ensure proper functioning with relation to local settings is known as localization testing. Depending on the complexity and size of the software, localization testing can range from simple to complex processing. The main purposes of localization testing are to ensure that there are NO bugs during the process of translation, the content is displayed perfectly and the product functions well for the target market.

Localization Testing Verifies

  • How accurately the build has been translated into the target language.
  • If the product contains a high-quality translation.
  • Whether the product retains the functionality as the previous one.

Localization testing should be performed along with functional testing for better results. With language change, directions to perform specific functions can get confused. This can lead to functional failure of the software.

Things You Have to Consider in Localization Testing

  • Things that are altered while localization. UI and the content files.
  • Operating system and keyboards.
  • Text filters.
  • Spelling and sorting rules, upper and lower case conversations.
  • Upgrades and installation need to be run in the localized environment.
  • Focus on cultural-specific, language-specific and country-specific areas.
  • Look for the encryption algorithm incorporated into the software.
  • The rules for distribution of the cryptographic software differ in different countries.

If the software product is properly globalized, any language version of Windows 2000/ XP can be used for testing. It should be noted that the localized product should also work on any language version of the operating system with MUI (Multilingual User interface) installed.

How to Perform Localization Testing

If you’ve started on the process of localization testing, you might find it quite difficult in the beginning. There are several steps to follow, and it’s very important to not skip any step if you want it done in given budget at the right time. Before localization testing, you need a good strategy to help the developers to quickly release the software that can grow also in the foreign market. Different steps involved in testing are:
1) Testing Scope
This part of localizaton testing includes verification of testing platforms, languages, new features and the test case coverage. It is based on new features that are available for quality assurance (QA). The test case development includes:
  • Verifying the installation and uninstallation process
  • Verifying functional issues
  • Verifying the user interface (UI)
  • Checking localization of all documentation
  • Going through the internationalization elements- Support multiple characters, font, writing and reading of external files and display data in GUI
2) Testing Execution
For localization testing, we need to set regression testing, normal testing, verification testing and final testing.
  • Verification Testing: Functional software testing that is done before the quality assurance and detailed testing processing.
  • Normal Testing: This is used to run normal tests and also, to find the log defends during the execution of the program.
  • Regression Testing: This method ensures that all the defects are cleared before the software is given to the target region.
  • Final Testing: Includes the final check of the software before delivery of the product.
 3) Test Case Management
It’s important to maintain the test cases to perform simple management and to record all the test results. The defects that occur during testing can be categorized as:
  • Core & Global bugs- Reproduced on multiple language versions, indicating the coding error found in the source.
  • Localization bugs- Bugs found during the localization process, that should be recorded in the tracking system.
 4) Automation Testing
This type of testing is not necessary for all projects but in some big testing processes which require repeated testing. This could be good for long-term cost saving. Automation method is mainly used for UI testing, functional testing and screen shooting. These automation testing tools used smartly then the testing efficiency can increase.

  • Select the apt automation testing tool
  • Make a workable testing framework
  • Test case management
  • Transfer to executable script patterns
  • After execution of scripts, collect the testing results
  • Analyze the reports for defects if any.
 5) Mobile App Localizing Testing
This is a much more complex process than that of the web testing process. In the case of web browsers, it uses standard browser and keyboards as input methods. But in mobile apps, there are multiple operating systems, different input methods- keyboard, touch and various screen sizes. Once the content has been localized, the file is undergone a final quality assurance check for linguistic accuracy, completeness, and perfect layout. This is performed to verify links, formatting, and functionality. The localized software is again verified for content consistency with the original English source and to ensure that there are no errors.
Getting your software done for the foreign market requires more than just simple translation. The best practices of localization testing have to contain specific procedures, checklists, and functions that are aimed at the type of software and target language. Many companies underestimate the development, testing, and amount of planning required for quality processing. If the effort and scope are carefully analyzed against the advantages of marketing to a new region, the entire process can be much easier.
